Building a LNG Gateway for South Africa
Ukwanda LNG (Pty) Ltd is a South African energy infrastructure company developing an open access Liquefied Gas (LNG) import terminal with storage and regasification facilities at the Port of Ngqura in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.
Established through a strategic partnership between Tamasa Energy Group (Tamasa) and the Strategic Fuel Fund (SFF), Ukwanda LNG is poised to be a key enabler of energy transition, industrial development and regional growth.
The terminal project directly supports the national energy strategy outlined in the Integrated Resource Plan 2019 (IRP2019), which provides for 3,000MW of new gas-fired power generation. It is also aligned with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s (DMRE) Gas Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (GASIPPPP), which is currently underway.
The terminal project has been designated as a Strategic Integrated Project (“SIP”) by the Presidential Infrastructure Coordination Commission (“PICC”) and is supported by a Section 79 directive issued by the Minister of Transport.
The Ukwanda LNG Terminal represents more than infrastructure, it is a catalyst for long-term economic growth in the Eastern Cape and beyond.

By enabling secure access to cleaner energy, the project:
- Attracts investment to the Coega SEZ
- Supports job creation and skills development
- Strengthens South Africa’s energy resilience and diversification
With regulatory certainty under the IRP2019 and strong policy alignment, Ukwanda LNG is positioned to be a strategic South African gateway to the global LNG market.
